Global Asia Insurance Partnership names John Maroney as new Chief Executive Officer

The Global Asia Insurance Partnership (GAIP) has appointed John Maroney as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 1 September 2023.

Mr Maroney will succeed outgoing CEO Conor Donaldson who has been with GAIP since its establishment. This appointment comes after an exhaustive and meticulous search process to identify an exceptional leader to guide GAIP.

Mr Maroney has over three decades of executive and board-level experience, with expertise in financial services, pensions, and insurance.

Most recently, he served as the CEO of the Self-Managed Super Annuation (SMSF) Association (Australia).

Prior to that, Mr Maroney was the Head of Capital and Solvency at the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS). His previous roles include Head of Financial Stability at the IAIS, CEO at the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, Founder and Director of Professional Financial Solutions, Partner at Deloitte and Australian Government Actuary (part of the Insurance & Superannuation Commission).

Mr Maroney is also a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Mr Maroney expressed his enthusiasm about joining GAIP, stating, “It is a privilege to join GAIP. Asia's continued growth will require greater protection against large-scale systemic risks, and I am confident that GAIP together with its partners can co-create innovative solutions to build long-term risk resilience in Asia.”

Outgoing CEO Conor Donaldson said, “I am immensely proud of the journey we have undertaken together at GAIP. As I step down from my role as CEO, I am confident that the foundation we have built will serve as a strong platform for future success. I have every faith that under the leadership of John, GAIP will continue to thrive and achieve new milestones.”

Commenting on the new appointment, Professor Yoshihiro Kawai, Chairman of GAIP said: “The selection process was rigorous, and John emerged as the clear choice due to his experience, exceptional leadership skills and industry insights. I am certain that he will continue to build upon the strong foundation established by Conor. Under John's leadership, supported by the team, GAIP will deepen its relationships with our partners and continue to build resilience and address protection gaps in Asia.”
